About The FAQ                                                      |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>The main reason for this FAQ is to go into more detail about the differences<br>between the three versions of Vice City for the PS2 and the two versions of<br>Vice City for the Xbox.<br><br>This document not only catalogs the changes within the games but also lists<br>the packaging changes so you can help find the right version of Vice City so<br>you can continue to use your game saves should you need to find a replacement<br>disc.<br><br>This document also lists the complete scripts for the missions most affected<br>by the Haitian-American protest that led to the creation of the<br>Haitian-Friendly version of Vice City.<br><br>I now have *FIVE* copies of Vice City (PS2 - Original, PS2 - Double Pack,<br>PS2 - Haitian-Friendly, Xbox (Original Double Pack), Xbox (Haitian-Friendly<br>Double Pack)).<br><br>I did find quite a few changes for Vice City on the Double Pack. When I<br>initially posted my findings on the site message boards, I got responses<br>from others that said that these changes were also found in the PC version.<br><br>Based on those responses I concluded that Rockstar tweaked the PS2 versions<br>of both games to be more or less equal to the PC version which had some new<br>ideas incorporated into it.<br><br>However, a gentleman by the name of \"magnus jason\" gave me some information<br>that suggests that these changes were made prior to the PC version.....<br><br>  \"i thoght you might want to know that all the changes with the double <br>   pack\/original were already in the pal version of vice city original so the <br>   playstation 2 original version of vice city which was realesed later in <br>   australia because of censorship issues (they had to remove hookers) has <br>   all of the changes mentioned in your guide\"<br><br>In one of the letters from the removed e-mail section, written by Nick D., he<br>mentioned something about added cars:<br><br>  \"And also i wanted to tell you i found another change they made, which is <br>   that they added a enforcer to the parking lot of the vice point police <br>   station in the DB version.\"<br><br>After completing 100% in both the DP and Haitian-Friendly Versions then I did<br>laps around Vice City hitting certain spots where I found additional parked<br>vehicles in the Xbox version and tried to find them in the PS2 versions:<br><br>  >>Love Fist Limo (VROCK)<br>  >>Bus (near Airport)<br>  >>Police Cheetah (behind the Little Havana Police Station)<br>  >>Enforcer (Vice Point Police Station)<br>  >>Securicar (in front of El Banco Corrupto Grande)<br><br>After doing several laps in each PS2 version I've found that there are *NO*<br>additional parked vehicles in any of the PS2 versions. This feature is<br>exclusive to the Xbox and maybe the PC version also.<br><br>There were also a few changes in the Haitian-Friendly version beyond the<br>removal of the offending lines of script. I'll go into more detail a little<br>later.<br><br>            \/=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\\<br> \/=========================================================================\\<br>| >GEN2. The Haitian Controversy                                            |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>In the spring of 2012 a book called \"Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft<br>Auto\" (by David Kushner) was released. It details the history of Rockstar<br>Games from its beginnings to the present (as of publishing). Part of the book<br>chronicles the controversy concerning the Haitians, the basics of which<br>are as follows:<br><br>One of the New York television stations had a feature called \"Shame on You\"<br>which exposed shady goings on within the city and nearby areas. In November<br>of 2003 newscaster Arnold Diaz, who runs the feature, ran a piece on Vice<br>City.<br><br>He focused on how you are supposed to kill the Haitians within the game.<br>Arnold considered it racist and was very upset with it. This was why he<br>featured it on \"Shame on You\".<br><br>It didn't take long for the Haitian community to respond. The Haitian Centers<br>Council put out a press release protesting the game's content.<br>Haitian-Americans protested outside New York's City Hall. Haitian president<br>Jean-Bertrand Aristide went talking to the U.S. authorities about the racism<br>within the game.<br><br>The protests became so loud that Rockstar Games was forced into making an<br>apology and then into making changes within new prints of the game to rectify<br>the situation. This controversy is why there is a Version 3 of Vice City,<br>dubbed \"Haitian-Friendly\".<br><br>  \/==++====++==\\                                             \/==++====++==\\<br> \/==++====++====++====++====++====&lt;&lt;##0##>>====++====++====++====++====++==\\<br>| >VCT2. Vice City (PlayStation 2 Version)                                  |<br> \\==++====++====++====++====++====&lt;&lt;##0##>>====++====++====++====++====++==\/<br>  \\==++====++==\/                                             \\==++====++==\/<br><br>This section goes into general descriptions and cosmetic (cover and disc)<br>differences of all three versions of Vice City. The aim of this part is to<br>help you avoid the single biggest issue between all three versions:<br>incompatible game saves.<br><br> \/!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\\<br>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br>| Game saves from one version will *NOT*, I repeat, will *NOT* work with    |<br>| *ANY* of the two other versions!                                          |<br>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br> \\!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\/<br><br>If you try to load a game save from the Original into the (Original) Double<br>Pack or Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack) then the game<br>will respond with a \"Load Failure\" and then will restart the game.<br><br>If you try to load a game save from the (Original) Double Pack or<br>Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack) into the Original<br>Version then the game will crash at the \"Loading Data\" screen.<br><br>This will also happen if you try to use game saves from the (Original) Double<br>Pack Version with the Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack).<br><br>I should note that Stand-Alone means the non-Double Pack version of the disc.<br><br>The main reason for the incompatibility issue is because if you make any<br>significant changes to the main program then the game saves from the old<br>version will no longer be recognized by the new version. This is an issue<br>that is unfixable.<br><br>There have been many topic threads on some of the message boards about<br>someone replacing a Vice City disc because of wear or theft and realizing<br>that their game saves will no longer work even though they thought they<br>replaced it with a comparable disc.<br><br>One of the main objectives of this document is to show you how to tell the<br>three versions apart so if you need to replace a Vice City disc or want to<br>play around with another version you can tell what version is what.<br><br>            \/=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\\<br> \/=========================================================================\\<br>| >PLS1. PS2 Version Descriptions                                           |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>Listed below are general descriptions of the three versions of Vice City<br>(American) for the PlayStation 2.<br><br>The version numbers listed can be found by placing Vice City into a PC or Mac<br>that has a DVD-ROM drive. Then use a program that can open up text files<br>(like Notepad (PC) or SimpleText (Mac)) and open up the file \"system.cnf\". <br><br>I've also included the shorthand for each version that I may use from time to<br>time in this document.<br><br>  >>Original Version (1.40)<br>    ***********************<br>      This is the version that came out on release day in October 2002. <br>      Approximately four million copies were pre-ordered (including mine) <br>      before release day. This version has several bugs in it that caught <br>      gamers by surprise like the Cherry Popper Save Glitch and the Detonator <br>      Bug.<br><br>  >>Double Pack Version (2.01) [Shorthand: DP Version]<br>    **************************************************<br>      When Rockstar announced that they were doing a combo package with GTA3 <br>      and Vice City for the Xbox they also planned one for the PlayStation 2 <br>      as well. They took the time to get rid of the major glitches and made <br>      other additional changes. This may also be called (Original) Double <br>      Pack Version.<br><br>  >>Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00) [Shorthand: HF Version]<br>    *******************************************************<br>      A lot of Haitian-Americans got mad about how they were represented in <br>      Vice City. They raised enough of a stink to get Rockstar to change Vice <br>      City to remove or alter references about Haitians within the game.<br><br>      This version was released in early 2004. This version comes as a <br>      Stand-Alone as well as being part of later runs of the Double Pack. The <br>      Double Pack Version may also be called the (Haitian-Friendly) Double <br>      Pack Version. The Greatest Hits copies of Vice City (PS2) are also <br>      Haitian-Friendly.<br><br>            \/=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\\<br> \/=========================================================================\\<br>| >PLS2. Cover Differences                                                  |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>There are two major covers for Vice City: Stand-Alone (single disc) and the<br>Double Pack.<br><br>Both the Original Version and Haitian-Friendly Version come as Stand-Alones.<br>The Greatest Hits version of Vice City (PS2) is also Haitian-Friendly. As<br>noted earlier, the Haitian-Friendly version was introduced into the Double<br>Pack in later production runs.<br><br>When looking at the covers for the Stand-Alone discs there are *NO*<br>differences between the Original and Haitian-Friendly (non-Greatest Hits)<br>Versions. Same goes for the Original and Haitian-Friendly Double Pack covers.<br><br>But there is something on the lower corner of the back cover that will help<br>you tell the versions apart. That would be the bar code. At the very bottom<br>of the bar code are two sets of numbers. The first set starts with \"10425\".<br>This does not change from version to version so I will not use this set of<br>numbers again.<br><br>It is the *SECOND* set of numbers that change from version to version. The one thing that stands out more than anything else is what I call<br>the Disc Banner. At the bottom is the PlayStation 2 logo. The area<br>surrounding the logo is the Disc Banner. It will come in one of two colors<br>depending on whether it is a Stand-Alone or Double Pack Disc:<br><br>  0====================0<br>  | Stand-Alone: Black |<br>  |====================|<br>  | Double Pack: Red   |<br>  0====================0<br><br>When comparing the Original and Haitian-Friendly discs I found that there is<br>absolutely *NO* differences in the artwork. Period. Although I don't have the<br>Haitian-Friendly-Double Pack discs I can only assume that the disc artwork is<br>the same between the OR-DP and HF-DP versions.<br><br>However, there is something you can look at on the game discs that you can<br>use to determine what version you have.....<br><br>            \/=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\\<br> \/=========================================================================\\<br>| >PLS4. The Disc Ring                                                      |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>One of the more important discoveries that was made, inspired by reader Matt<br>McAlister, in better identifying the Vice City discs is what I will call the<br>Disc Ring.<br><br>Take your Vice City disc and flip it over so you are looking at the data<br>(silver) side. Near the center hole you should see the PlayStation 2 logos.<br>Beyond that you should see some bar codes. This is the Disc Ring. It has about half the changes that would be found in the<br>Double Pack Version.<br><br>Apparently, Rockstar made some changes to Vice City for the European release<br>then made some more changes for the Double Pack version that came later.<br><br>            \/=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\\<br> \/=========================================================================\\<br>| >PLS5. Replacement Hints                                                  |<br> \\=========================================================================\/<br>            \\=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\/<br><br>All new copies Vice City on the store shelves at all of the major store<br>chains are of the Haitian-Friendly version (Stand-Alone and Double Pack).<br><br>For versions 2.01 and 1.40 you will probably have to go to a used game store<br>to find. Here you can set up your car <br>  with a bomb just like you could do in GTA3.<br><br>  Just park the car and detonate it at your leisure from a safe distance. <br>  When you exit the car then you will see the Detonator icon in your weapon <br>  slot. Press Circle to blow up the car. But, when you press R2 or L2, then <br>  you will find that you are stuck on the detonator - you can't switch to <br>  another weapon. This can be quite distressing.<br><br>  This also happens with the Remote Grenade weapon when you throw the grenade <br>  and it switches to the Detonator part of the weapon.<br><br>0================0<br>| Dealing With It \\<br>0=================================><br><br>  The reason for this, based on several sources, has to do with the Infinite <br>  Ammo Feature that you earn when you get 100%. The Detonator weapon was not <br>  designed to have any ammo and the program gets confused when it has <br>  infinite ammo and it switches to the Detonator. <br><br>  There are, however, a couple of ways to get rid of the Detonator.....<br><br>    >>Get Wasted or Busted.<br><br>    >>Go through a metal detector at either the Leaf Links Golf Club or <br>      Escobar International Airport to remove your weapons. However, when you enter <br>  the room to get the uniform, then you will get a 2-Star rating which will <br>  go away when you get the uniform.<br><br>  Unfortunately, there always seems to be a cop inside the locker room who <br>  will shoot at you, taking off armor or health, while trying to get the <br>  uniform. It wasn't fair losing chunks of your armor while trying <br>  to get the uniform while a cop was inside the locker room (which was most <br>  of the time in the Original version). Motion blurring requires <br>     programmers to create complex algorithms that are very specific to the <br>     hardware. Thus you might say, because they didn't recreate the algorithm <br>     specifically for the XBox, that the XBox emulates the effect. Because <br>     they fixed a whole bunch of bugs when developing Double Pack for the <br>     XBox, when creating the PS2 Double Pack they translated the XBox's code <br>     back over to save time and money. That's why this alteration appears in <br>     the PS2 version as well. You turn on the splatters by turning the Trails on and turn<br>off the Trails to turn off the splatters.<br><br>You can do this in the Original Version also. If you turn off the Trails at<br>the beginning of the game you will get rain and blood splatters.
