Your adventure begins in the sinister region of Goro’s Lair. At first, you will come across Goro’s least threatening servants, the orgs. Use this opportunity to familiarize yourself with your fighting skills by applying a variety of moves. Navigate forward through the open gates, climb the ledges and ascend to the top of the bridge where you’ll encounter Scorpion, who will dodge before any attempts at interaction.
In the next chamber, the challenge will be to perform a Fatality, your first decisive step. Wait until the meter in the top left corner of the screen is full, then perform the move combination revealed on the screen.
When you find a fire pit, use a defeated body to tear down the brick wall at the end of the scene. This will open your way to the first big challenge: a colossal ogre waiting under the bridge. While it’s not particularly difficult, keep an eye out for its club strikes. When you beat him, you will earn a yellow amulet, which grants the Long Jump ability, an essential resource for crossing great distances. Proceed to cross the bridge, head to the waterfall, eliminate the opponents with spears and enter the portal.
WUSHI ACADEMY
The journey continues at Wushi Academy, where you will come across a battalion of Tarakas, copies of the villain Baraka. When you reach a fork, head right towards the bridge, go up the stairs on the left and continue right. Use one of the Tarakas to destroy a pile of rocks, opening a path below, then return and continue forward.
Push another Taraka using a hook strike to launch him into the catapult and bring down the barrier above. Return to the stairs, but this time, head left and repeat the process to dislodge more rocks.
Return to the main cleared path, climb onto the high rock and continue. Help Johnny Cage defeat the bucktooths, then guide him to the top, near the wheel (a symbol will be hidden behind the bars for you to collect soon). As you pass through the arena and reach the next room, a ball will destroy the wall, opening a new passage. Climb up it and keep Johnny safe. When he finishes manipulating the mechanism, return to defend it again.
After Johnny completes his actions, head to the grate that has opened and collect the green symbol to expand your energy bar. He collects one of the available cutting weapons, climbs the walls behind the lake and cuts the ropes on the cauldrons to open a passage.
Head left, get ready to fight the fire. Go to the bottom of the screen, climb onto the roof and turn right. There, next to the ball, you will find a secret cone that unlocks the Johnny Cage character for Versus mode.
Downstairs, you’ll come across the iconic “Test Your Might”, the classic bonus mode from the first Mortal Kombat. Conquer it and part of the fire will be extinguished. Return to the start and climb onto the roof on the left. At the wall, go left and go through another strength test.
With the path clear, go right and overcome another challenge. Proceed right and forward to go around the statue.
Memorize the location of the fourth test of strength, as you will return to this location to acquire a new skill. After completing the task, head to the end of the corridor and use the rooftops to reach the fifth and final test. After completing it, find Johnny again, return and take the path to the left.
Navigate through various locations blocked by statues and chasms. Stand firm, move forward, save your progress, and finally jump into the portal.
THE PORTAL
The Portal serves as the hub for all future phases of the game. In order to continue your journey, you need to enter the portal that leads to Evil Monastery.
EVIL MONASTERY
The first step here requires you to go up the stairs. To access the next room, climb the first section of stairs and activate the lever through the Test Your Might challenge. Then go down, throw two opponents at the newly emerged spears, go up the stairs again and arm yourself. Use combos at the top to dispatch enemies. This area can be revisited at any time to gain more experience.
Project a body over the spikes and use it as a makeshift ladder. You will then discover a room with a demon lurking in it. Fight the enemies and proceed upwards. When your hero is trapped between some bars, it’s time to master Multality, the ability to annihilate multiple enemies simultaneously. After that, climb the pillars to access the room’s roof and locate the icon that unlocks the character Kitana in Versus mode. Continue to climb around the tower ahead, but don’t forget to save your game along the way.
KITANA
Kitana, initially, does not present much of a challenge. After halfway through the confrontation, the fighter escapes through the portal. Her mission is to pursue it. On the other side of the portal, you’ll find assassins Jade and Mileena ready to get in your way, but remember that Kitana is your main target. Keep attacking her until she is pushed into the force field, and prevents her allies from helping her.
With Kitana defeated, it’s time to deal with Jade and Mileena. Throw one of them into the cell and deal with the other. To end the battle, you need to hit the Fatality. Upon victory, you gain your first tournament amulet and the Fist of Ruin ability, which allows you to destroy statues. Exit through the portal, return along the path you took and destroy the statues to return to The Portal.
LIVING FOREST
Upon entering the Living Forest, the first obstacle to overcome is a stone statue, followed by a horde of zombies. Throw a zombie into the mouth of the tree located in the left corner of the screen. This will be relevant later on. When the bushes collapse, save your progress, go back and jump over the bushes on the right. There is a secret icon waiting there.
Just before navigating the spiked platforms, notice a pillar on the right. Capture an aberration and throw it at this pillar. Return to the previous screen and collect the item near the waterfall to unlock Reptile in Versus mode.
Jump onto the door pedestal in the right corner and defeat more zombies. Throw one of them at the second tree. Enter the new door, cross the stone men and jump onto the rocks. If you happen to fall into the lake, giant serpents will attack you. Climb the pillar and enter the door.
Four snakes will block your path when you are in the water. Throw a zombie at each one to continue, then save your game. As you go up, you will find the last tree. Throw a zombie at it and enter Reptile’s lair.
REPTILE’S LAIR
In Reptile’s lair, you will learn the Brutality submission, which grants you more speed and strength. Advance through the corridor adorned with stone statues and eliminate another of the game’s snakes. To reach the pillars while avoiding the animal, it is essential to memorize the path it takes. Hit four pillars to make the snake disappear, and then prepare for a confrontation with the Reptile ninja.
The best strategy against Reptile is to apply combos non-stop and take cover near the rock on the right whenever he teleports up. When he returns, repeat the combos until he becomes invisible. From there, things get complicated. Launch flying in all directions. When you hit Reptile, wait until he gets up and keep attacking until he is defeated. As a reward, you acquire the Wall Climb skill, which allows you to climb walls. Make your way back to The Portal, taking the opportunity to get the skill that was left behind on the statue in the gym.
SOUL TOMBS
In the central hall, proceed through the green-lit door and cross the next room until you reach the other end. In the next room, go right. To the left you’ll find a door with two zombies holding weights, but you won’t need to return to this point until later. Cross the platforms carefully, avoiding the green skulls. In the next room, go through the fan. In the subsequent room, throw an enemy onto the spike below the platform to make it accessible. Climb onto the platform and go right.
Jump onto the elevator and throw bodies at the fan blades. Cross to the other side and activate the circular device. The statue will release a sword in front of the weighted zombie door. Hit them and enter the newly opened passage. In this room, Shang Tsung will attack your character and escape through a portal. Destroy the columns to break the portal, return to the starting hall and go through the red door. Enter through the door in the center of the screen and climb the wall with the skulls. Destroy the statue in the right corner and continue moving along the edges until the end. There, you will find another game secret that unlocks Baraka in Versus mode.
Go up again and go through the door on the other side (where the symbol was). Here there is a path full of thorns and two bars on each side. Follow it to the end, jumping over the spikes and perform the test that appears. The grate on the left will fall down. You must drop it onto the guard, then repeat the test and do the same with the railing on the right side. When you complete this task, perform the next test to open the bars in the main corridor and go there.
Cross two rooms full of enemies. In the second, there is one more test. If successful, a door at the beginning of the area will open. Return to the room where you threw enemies at the door to face the big ogre from the beginning of the game. After victory, the door to the main hall opens. Advance there to face Baraka.
BARAKA
This fight is considered one of the most difficult. In the first stage, keep a safe distance from the boss, Baraka, to avoid being hit by his sharp blades. Baraka will jump to the other side and throw two burning men towards him. Finish them off using flying attacks and return your focus to Baraka. When he jumps back to the other side, it’s time to practice your ranged strikes. Use special powers to hit him, being careful with the rain of thorns.
As soon as you get the chance, grab the swords that appear. Attack Baraka with your weapons until he starts to defend himself. When this happens, you will have to enter a test of strength. If you win, plunge your sword into Baraka’s stomach. Repeat the same with the other sword and you will have completed your task. It’s time to return to the portal to face a new mission.
WASTERLAND
Climbing the ladder of skulls, crossing the bridge and destroying the blood ball that obstructs the passage, you will encounter a series of enemies. The best strategy to eliminate them is to throw them into the pool of blood. A powerful beam will finish them off. Afterwards, a test will be available. Go through the gate that has opened and get ready to face Sub-Zero.
SUB-ZERO
Faced with the ice ninja, the key to victory is abusing your special attacks and preventing him from getting closer. After the animation, pay attention along the vessel’s journey, where dozens of skulls will try to emerge. Finish them all quickly. At the castle, Sub-Zero will freeze the gate. Clear the passage with a strong blow, but before entering the fortress, collect the secret cone near the Lion statue (on the left) to unlock Sub-Zero in Versus mode.
Throw five bodies into the wheel in the center of the screen. When a waterfall of blood forms, protect Sub-Zero until he can freeze the liquid. Climbing through the frozen blood, enter the door. Afterwards, Sub-Zero will have to freeze the side wall. Protect him and then run to reach the other side. After the animation, go through the door.
CAP
Release as many spells as possible and keep a safe distance from Goro. When he grabs the pillar, be cautious and continue releasing your spells. When you defeat him, you will gain the Double Jump ability. Exit through the portal that appeared.
THE DEAD POOL
Throw five enemies onto each of the hooks at the top of the screen to open the door. Inside, you acquire the Swing Ability skill. Exit through the door, cross the bars attached to the wall and head outside.
RETHERREALM
After saving the game, proceed through the door. After the animation, it’s time to face another iconic character from the series, Scorpion.
SCORPION
In the first stage of the confrontation with Scorpion, your focus should be on aerial strikes and the constant use of special skills. When the ninja escapes, chase him down the narrow path to the next platform. Here, his objective should be to dodge Scorpion’s attacks while he is on the mountain and, the moment he lets his guard down, take control of his rope. Repeat this strategy until Scorpion is defeated. However, despite performing the Fatality, Scorpion will return to continue to haunt you.
HELL SCORPION
The fight against Scorpion’s new form still favors the use of aerial strikes. When you defeat him, use Fatality to ensure he is eliminated this time. Although Scorpion desperately tries to survive, he will ultimately succumb. Now, with the five amulets in hand, you will be able to access The Foundry, which was locked in The Portal. Make your way there.
THE FOUNDRY
Once you enter The Foundry, head to the first passage on the right and complete the test to open the door. Continue up, turn left and complete the second test to open the next passage. Continue down and enter the room ahead. Cross the platforms to reach the door on the right. Throw five enemies into the bonfire to unlock the door.
After completing this task, get ready to face the giant ogre again. Use the same basic strategy to beat him. Then, throw two enemies onto the hook and climb the pillar that appeared.
Go left and perform another test. This one will cause the cauldron of gold to tip over. Proceed through the new door that has opened and exit through the passage on the left. In this room, throw an enemy into the lava and use it as a platform to get a hidden icon that unlocks Scorpion in Versus mode. Perform another test, obtain the golden weapon and return to the first screen. Go through the door you initially opened and destroy the two crystals to break the spell preventing the gate from opening. Go down the hall and see Kitana and Johnny Cage captured.
KANO – SECRET BOSS
Start a dialogue with Kitana three times. This will open a secret passage that leads to the Kano mercenary. Facing Kano is no chore, especially with Jax’s assistance. The secret here is to keep your distance, using your magic and aerial attacks. When you defeat Kano, Sonya will be freed and you will gain a bonus to your energy bar for the next confrontations. Return to the prison screen, save your game and follow the main hallway. Now, prepare for a series of non-stop combats, starting with Shang Tsung.
SHANG TSUNG
Shang Tsung is the least challenging of the three final bosses. He alternates between overhead strikes and hooks. Stay away from the villain when he transforms into another fighter, especially when he takes the form of Sub-Zero, as his kicks are difficult to defend against. Do your best to preserve your energy during this fight and be sure to apply the Fatality at the end, or Shang Tsung will return to the fight with half his energy.
KINTARO
During the battle against Kintaro, two energy spheres will be available. Pick them up if necessary. Kintaro can be an annoying opponent, but not extremely difficult. Aerial attacks and special abilities are effective against him. Keep a safe distance and avoid the jumps he makes. Whenever he jumps, jump to the position he was previously in. When Kintaro stops using this attack, resume the strategy of aerial strikes and special powers.
SHAO KAHN
The last boss, Shao Kahn, is quite difficult, and you’ll need to memorize his moves to avoid unpleasant surprises. In the first part of the combat, circle around Shao Kahn and, when he launches a magical attack, dodge and counterattack with your own fire spheres. In the second part, the villain will wield a sledgehammer and try to hit your character. As long as he moves towards you, keep casting your fire spells. When Shao starts spinning like a top, use the double jump to escape. Continue with this strategy until the enemy’s energy runs out and you finish the game.
