Pallet Town

At the beginning of the game, you will find yourself in your house in Pallet Town. The first thing you should do is go up to your room and interact with the PC to get a Potion. This can be useful in early battles. Then go down the stairs and leave the house.

When you leave, walk north, where you will find an area with tall grass. When you enter the grass, Professor Oak will appear, interrupting your walk. It will show you how to catch a Pokémon by capturing a wild Pikachu. Afterwards, he will ask you to follow him to his laboratory.

In the laboratory, you will meet Gary, your rival. Professor Carvalho will explain the situation and tell you to catch a Pokémon that is on the table. However, when you try to catch it, Gary will push you and catch the Pokémon, which is an Eevee. In return, Professor Carvalho will give you the Pikachu he captured earlier.

After receiving your Pikachu, when trying to leave the laboratory, Gary will challenge you to a battle. Use your Pikachu to defeat him. This initial battle is quite simple and should be easy to win. After winning, your Pikachu will level up. Now, you can head north out of Pallet Town towards Viridian City.

Viridian City

On the way to Viridian City, you will meet a man who will give you a Potion. This can be useful for healing your Pikachu during battles. Along the way, you’ll find some Pidgeys and Rattatas in the grass. It’s a good idea to fight them to gain experience.

Arriving in Viridian City, the first thing to do is recharge your Pokémon at the Poké Center. Then, go to the Poké Mart, where the attendant will give you a package to give to Professor Carvalho. With the package in hand, return to Pallet Town.

Back in Professor Carvalho’s lab, give him the package. Gary will be there again. The Professor will give you the Pokédex, a device that records information about the Pokémon you encounter and capture. Gary will mention that his sister has a map for you. Go to her house (next to hers) and get the map.

With the map in hand, head back to the Poké Mart in Viridian City and buy some Poké Balls (I recommend about five). Now it’s time to catch some Pokémon! In the grassy areas around Viridian City, you can find Pidgey and Rattata. Capture some to add to your team.

Afterwards, head to the area on the right of Viridian City. Here, you can find Mankey, Male and Female Nidoran, as well as Spearow. Gary will be there again, with level 9 Pokémon. Fight him and defeat him. This will increase your Pokémon’s experience and prepare you for the next step.

Viridian Forest

Before entering the forest, recharge your Pokémon at the Poké Center and buy some more Poké Balls (about three). Now, head north where you will find the Viridian Forest. If you’ve caught a Spearow, it will be extremely useful here due to its advantage against Bug-type Pokémon.

In the forest, you can find and capture Caterpie, Metapod and, if you’re lucky, some Pidgeottos. Take this opportunity to strengthen your team. Additionally, you will find several trainers in the forest. Fight them to earn money and experience.

Explore the forest well in search of hidden items. These items may be useful in future battles. The forest exit is located to the north, on the left. Continue in this direction to reach Pewter City.

Pewter City

Welcome to Pewter City! This is where you will face your first big challenge: earning the Gym badge. First, head to the Pokémon Center to heal your team. It is essential that your Pokémon are in good shape before facing the Gym leader.

Preparing for the Gym

Before heading to the Gym, it’s crucial to ensure that at least three of your Pokémon are above level 10. If you’ve captured a Butterfree and it has learned the move Confusion, this will be a huge advantage. Fighting-type Pokémon such as Mankey are also very effective against Brock’s Pokémon.

Facing Brock

The Pewter City Gym leader, Brock, uses a level 10 Geodude and a level 12 Onix. Use Water, Grass, or Fighting-type moves to gain an advantage in battle. After defeating him, you will receive the Rock Badge, which is the first of your journey.

Exploring Pewter City

After beating Brock, return to the Pokémon Center to heal your Pokémon. Buy some Potions and Poké Balls from the local store to prepare for the next part of the journey. Now, head east of the city.

Route 3 and Mt. Moon

Facing the Trainers

On Route 3, you will find around seven Pokémon trainers. Fight them all to gain experience and money. Your Pikachu should be around level 15 at this point. Make sure to keep him happy by using Potions and other items.

Catching Pokémon

On this route, you can find Pokémon like Sandshrew and Jigglypuff in the grass. Capture a few to diversify your team. Near the entrance to Mt. Moon, there is a Pokémon Center. Use it to heal your team before entering the cave.

Mt. Moon

Exploring the Cave

Mt. Moon is a cave full of challenges. Take on all the trainers you find to increase your team’s experience. Here, you can catch Geodude, Zubat, Paras, and the rare Clefairy. Keep an eye out for hidden items, including the Moon Stone, which can evolve certain Pokémon.

Facing Team Rocket

Inside the cave, you will find members of Team Rocket. In the end, you will have to fight Jessie and James. Additionally, a scientist will offer two fossils. The Helix Fossil transforms into Omanyte and the Dome Fossil into Kabuto. Choose one and continue on your way.

Leaving Mt. Moon

With patience, you will find the exit from Mt. Moon and head to the next town.

Cerulean City

Arriving in Cerulean City

Cerulean City is a vibrant city with several attractions. First, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Next to the Center, there is a house where you can receive a Bulbasaur. To do this, your Pikachu must be very happy and above level 20. Talk to the girl in the house to get your Bulbasaur.

Cerulean Gym Challenge

The Cerulean Gym is led by Misty, who uses a level 18 Staryu and a level 20 Starmie. If your Pikachu is at a high level, the battle will be easier. Before facing Misty, fight the two trainers in the Gym to gain additional experience.

Facing Misty

Use Pikachu’s electric attacks to defeat Misty’s Pokémon. Beating it will give you the Cascade Badge. Then, retrieve your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center.

Towards Bill’s House

After beating Misty, head north towards Bill’s house. Along the way, you will face several trainers, so be prepared. Explore the area well and capture new Pokémon to strengthen your team.

Bill’s house

Encounter with Gary and the Nugget Bridge

Just north of Cerulean City, you’ll find the famous Nugget Bridge. But before you cross it, you will have to face your rival, Gary. He will start the battle with a Pidgeotto, followed by three other Pokémon. Prepare well for this battle, making sure your Pokémon are at good levels and have varied attacks.

After defeating Gary, you can begin crossing the Nugget Bridge. The bridge is guarded by five trainers that you must defeat consecutively. Beating them all will net you a valuable Nugget, which can be sold for a good amount of money.

Catching Pokémon and Obtaining Charmander

After crossing Nugget Bridge, continue climbing until you find an area of tall grass. Here, you can catch Pokémon like Oddish, Bellsprout, and the elusive Abra. Near this area, there will be a lone trainer. Speak to him to receive a Charmander, a valuable addition to your team.

On the way to Bill’s house

After obtaining Charmander, head right along the route. You will find more trainers to battle. These additional fights are great for accumulating experience and strengthening your team. Continue until you reach Bill’s house, the famous Pokémon Researcher.

Inside Bill’s house, you will discover that he is trapped in a Pokémon costume. Use his computer to help him get back to normal. In gratitude, Bill will give you an SS Ticket, which will allow you entry onto the SS Anne ship.

Return to Cerulean and Adventure with Team Rocket

With the SS Ticket in hand, return to Cerulean City. You can now enter the house that was blocked by Officer Jenny. Enter the house and exit through the hole in the back wall. Outside, you will find a member of Team Rocket. Defeat him to receive TM 28, Dig.

Then, head south until you find a house that leads to the underground passage to Vermilion City. This ticket is safe and fast, taking you directly to your next destination.

Vermilion City

Initial Exploration and Preparations

Arriving in Vermilion City, there are several things to do. First, get the fishing rod from the Fishing Guru, who is located to the left of the Pokémon Center. Then go to the Pokémon Fan Club, just above the town gym, to get the Bike Voucher.

With the Bike Voucher in hand, you can return to Cerulean City to exchange a bike at the bike shop for the item. This will make it much easier for you to move around the game world.

Preparing for the SS Anne

After obtaining the bike, return to Vermilion City. Now it’s time to use the SS Ticket that Bill gave you. Go to the mini port south of the city and give the ticket to the attendant to board the SS Anne.

SS Anne

Exploration and Battles

The SS Anne is full of trainers eager to battle. Take this opportunity to enter every room and face every trainer you encounter. These battles are an excellent way to evolve your Pokémon and accumulate experience and money.

Meeting with Gary and the Captain

In the middle of exploring the ship, you will meet Gary again. Prepare for a difficult battle, as his Pokémon will be around level 20. After defeating him, go to the Ship Captain’s room.

Inside the Captain’s room, you will discover that he is sick. Help him by rubbing his back and in thanks he will give you HM 01, Cut. This move is essential for advancing in certain areas of the game, allowing you to cut down small trees.

Departure of the SS Anne

After obtaining HM 01, exit the ship and return to Vermilion City. The SS Anne will depart shortly after, so make sure you have everything she needs done on board before leaving.

Vermilion City (Gym)

Preparing for the Gym

Now that you have HM 01 (Cut), teach it to one of your Pokémon. Then, use movement to cut down the small tree blocking the entrance to the Vermilion City Gym.

Solve the Gym Puzzle

Inside the Gym, you will find a small puzzle involving trash cans. To unlock the path to the leader, Lt. Surge, you will need to find two buttons hidden in the cans. The second button will always be adjacent to the first, so pay attention to the position of the surrounding cans.

Facing Lt. Surge

Lt. Surge uses a level 28 Raichu. An effective strategy is to start with a Pokémon that has moves to lower Raichu’s defense and attack. After weakening it, use a Rock-type Pokémon, like Geodude, or a Ground-type Pokémon, like Diglett, to finish the battle. With this strategy, victory will be guaranteed.

When you defeat Lt. Surge, you will receive the Thunder Badge. Now, head to the Vermilion City Pokémon Center and talk to Officer Jenny to get a level 10 Squirtle. Keep in mind that you must have at least three badges for her to give you the Squirtle.

Preparing for the Next Step

After adding Squirtle to your team, visit the Pokémon Center to heal your team. Then, buy some Potions and Poké Balls to be well prepared for the next leg of your journey. Now, head east of Vermilion and enter Diglett’s Cave.

Diglett’s Cave

Cave Exploration

Diglett’s Cave is a relatively short cave, but it’s a great place to catch Digletts and, with a bit of luck, a Dugtrio. Go through the cave and when you come out, use Cut to cut down some trees to the south. You will find a house where Professor Oak’s assistant will give you HM 05 (Flash). This movement will be essential for exploring dark areas later.

Returning to Pewter City

After obtaining HM 05, use Cut again right outside the cave to return to Pewter City. Go to the north-right part of the city and use Cut to enter an area where you will find a scientist. He will give you Old Amber, which can be used later to revive an Aerodactyl.

Returning to Vermilion City and Moving Forward

After getting the Old Amber, return to Vermilion City through Diglett’s Cave. Exiting to the right of Vermilion, you will find a new route with several trainers. Take the opportunity to battle them all and gain experience.

Way Back to Cerulean City

Now, return to Cerulean City. Use Cut in the area east of Cerulean, near the house with a hole in the wall where you found the Rocket. Head right, facing trainers along the way. Eventually, you will reach a Pokémon Center. Heal your Pokémon before continuing.

After healing your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, it’s time to enter the dark tunnel ahead. Make sure you have a Pokémon that knows the Flash move to light your way inside the tunnel. This will make the crossing much easier and safer.

Rock Tunnel

Preparing for the Rock Tunnel

Before entering the Rock Tunnel, make sure your Pokémon are above level 20. This is crucial as the tunnel is long and can be quite challenging. Bring a good amount of Potions and Repels if possible to make your journey easier.

Exploring the Rock Tunnel

Inside the Rock Tunnel, you’ll find a variety of wild Pokémon, including Onix, Machop, Zubat, and Geodude. These Pokémon can be useful in strengthening your team, so consider catching some of them.

As you progress, fight every trainer you come across. These battles are a great opportunity to gain experience and strengthen your Pokémon. Stay calm and move forward with patience. Eventually you will find the exit and reach the next town: Lavender.

Lavender City

Arrival in Lavender City

As you exit the Rock Tunnel, you will face the last trainers on the way to Lavender City. Once you arrive, head straight to the Pokémon Center to heal your team. For now, there isn’t much to do here, as you won’t be able to fully explore Pokémon Tower.

Heading to Celadon City

Leave Lavender City and go west. Fight with the trainers you meet along the way. If you’re planning on capturing a Mew later, avoid fighting the last trainer who is facing north.

Enter the house that serves as an underground shortcut to Celadon City. This path will take you directly to the biggest city in the game.

Celadon City

Initial Exploration of Celadon City

Celadon is a big city and full of things to do. First, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Make sure you have an open space on your team as you will receive a new Pokémon here.

Obtaining Eevee

Next to the Pokémon Center, there is a back entrance to Celadon’s mansion. Climb the stairs to the top and grab the Poké Ball on the table. Inside, you’ll find a level 25 Eevee.

Getting HM02 (Fly)

Go to the west end of town where there is a Snorlax blocking the way (which you will fight later). Use Cut to get past a small tree and follow the path to a house. There, you will receive HM02 (Fly). Teach Fly to a Pokémon on your team, allowing you to fast travel to any city you’ve already visited.

Shopping at Celadon Mart

Celadon Mart has five floors and sells a variety of useful items. Go up all the stairs to the top floor where you will find several vending machines. Buy a Fresh Water, a Lemonade and a Soda Pop. Give these drinks to the girl on the floor and get some TMs. Buy another Fresh Water and save it for later use.

Preparing for the Celadon Gym

The Celadon Gym is south of the city and is led by Érika. To access it, you will need to use Cut. Before facing Érika, it is recommended to have a Fire or Flying-type Pokémon on your team, as these types have an advantage over the Grass Pokémon she uses.

Celadon Gym

Facing Erika

In the Gym, you’ll find Érika, who has a level 32 Weepinbell, a level 32 Gloom, and a level 30 Tangela. Use your Fire or Flying-type Pokémon to give yourself an advantage in battle. After defeating her, you will receive the Rainbow Badge.

With the Rainbow Badge in hand, you can now catch the Squirtle from Officer Jenny in Vermilion City if you haven’t already.

Rockets Hideout

Preparation and Entry into the Hideout

First of all, recover your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center; Then head to the Game Corner, which is a place full of arcades and fun. However, your mission here will not be to play, but rather to discover a secret passage. Look for a Rocket Grunt near a poster and defeat it in battle. After winning, he will leave the poster. Interact with the poster to reveal a secret passage leading to the Rockets’ hideout. Enter it and get ready to face a series of challenges.

Exploring the First Floor

On the first floor of the hideout, defeat all the Rocket Grunts you encounter to gain experience and useful items. Your goal is to find the stairs that lead to the next floor. Take your time and explore every corner, collecting items along the way.

Second Floor: The Arrows

On the second floor, you will see a set of arrows on the floor that take you in specific directions. Don’t step on them yet. Instead, go down the stairs to the next floor. Your goal is to fully explore this floor before being taken away by the arrows, ensuring you don’t miss any important items or battles.

Third Floor: Elevator Key

On the third floor, continue fighting the Rockets. At one point, you will encounter a Rocket Grunt who will drop the Lift Key after being defeated. Take this key, as it is essential to access the elevator and advance through the hideout’s floors.

Returning to the Second Floor

Now that you have the Lift Key, go back to the second floor and step on the arrows. Let yourself be carried by them until you reach the stairs. Go up to fight some more Rockets if you wish, but your main objective is to find the elevator.

Using the Elevator

Use the Lift Key to access the elevator and select floor B4. On this floor, you will find Jessie and James, the famous members of Team Rocket. Prepare for a battle. Using a Ground-type Pokémon will make it easier to win against them. After defeating them, move forward to find Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket.

Facing Giovanni

Giovanni uses Ground-type Pokémon, so a Water or Grass-type Pokémon will be very effective against him. Defeat Giovanni to make him leave, leaving behind the Silph Scope item. This item is crucial to identifying the ghosts in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town.

Leaving the Hideout

With the Silph Scope in hand, return to the elevator and select floor B1. Defeat the last Rocket Grunt you encounter along the way and you’ll be free to exit the hideout. Recover your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center to prepare for your next adventures.

Back to Lavender City

Preparations in Lavender City

Welcome back to Lavender City, the game’s ghost town. The first thing to do is head to the Pokémon Center and recharge your Pokémon to make sure they’re in tip-top shape for what’s to come. After that, stop by the Poké Mart and buy some Super Balls, which will be useful for catching Pokémon in the next area.

Exploring Pokémon Tower

With the Silph Scope in hand, enter Pokémon Tower. This device will allow you to see the ghosts that haunt the place. On the first floor, go up the stairs to meet your rival, Gary, and prepare for a battle. Gary is always a challenge, so make sure your Pokémon are ready to take on his team.

Advancing Through the Floors

Continue climbing the tower, facing all the ghost trainers you encounter along the way. Use this opportunity to capture Haunter and Gastly, as well as Cubone, which can be found here. Training your Pokémon in the tower is a good idea, especially since there is a room with a restore point on the floor that heals all your Pokémon when you step into it. This is a great place to strengthen your team without having to leave the tower.

Facing the Ghost Marowak

On one of the upper floors, you will be blocked by a ghost Pokémon that will not allow you to pass. Use the Silph Scope to reveal that the ghost is, in fact, a Marowak. Unfortunately, you can’t capture him, so you’ll have to defeat him in battle to continue.

Battle Against Jessie and James

On the next floor, you will find Jessie and James, members of Team Rocket, who now have evolved Pokémon. Get ready for an intense battle against them. Use Ground or Water-type Pokémon to have an advantage over theirs.

Rescue of Mr. Fuji

After defeating Jessie and James, you will find Mr. Fuji at the top of the tower. He will be very grateful for his help and will take you back to his home in Lavender City. Speak to him to receive the Poké Flute, an essential item that can wake up sleeping Pokémon, like Snorlax, that block paths.

Advancing to Celadon City

Road to Saffron City

With the Poké Flute in hand, leave Lavender City and head west towards Saffron City. On the way, you will find a house where a guard previously did not allow you to pass. Now, talk to the guard and offer him the Fresh Water you bought in Celadon City. He will be happy and allow you to pass.

Saffron City

Starting Challenges in Saffron City

Saffron City is under the control of Team Rocket, and your mission is to expel them to continue your journey. The main place of interest here is Silph Co., the largest building in the middle of town. It is essential that you recover your Pokémon before entering, as you will face many challenges.

Exploring Silph Co.

In Silph Co., you will have the opportunity to face countless members of Team Rocket. These battles are great for gaining experience and money. Remember to leave the building to retrieve your Pokémon from the Pokémon Center whenever necessary. Alternatively, on the 9th floor of the building, there is a woman next to some beds who can retrieve your Pokémon.

  3. Keep going left until you find the Card Key.

Opening Doors with Card Key

With the Card Key in hand, explore every floor of the building, opening the gates and collecting valuable items. This exploration is crucial to not only strengthening your team, but also preparing you for the challenges ahead.

Facing Gary

After exploring the entire building, return to the 3rd floor. Walk past a Rocket and enter the hallway on the left, where you’ll find another teleport button. Step on it to be taken to a room where you will find Gary. Get ready for an intense battle, as Gary’s Pokémon can reach level 40.

Receiving the Lapras

After defeating Gary, talk to the man next to him to receive a level 25 Lapras. This is a valuable Pokémon that can be a great addition to your team.

Facing Jessie and James

Use the next teleport button to find Jessie and James. Defeat them in battle to advance.

Confrontation with Giovanni

Finally, you will face Giovanni again. This time, your Pokémon will be at higher levels, reaching up to level 40. Use effective strategies to defeat it. After winning, talk to the man on the couch to receive a Master Ball, which is perfect for capturing rare Pokémon like Mewtwo.

Preparing for Sabrina’s Gym

With Team Rocket defeated, you can now face Sabrina, the leader of the Saffron City Psychic Gym. But first, you can choose to visit the martial arts dojo to the left of the Psychic Gym, where you can fight various trainers to win a Hitmonchan or a Hitmonlee.

Facing Sabrina

To reach Sabrina in the Psychic Gym, follow these steps:

  1. Step on the first teleport button.
  2. Go left, then left again, left again, and finally down.
  3. This will take you directly to Sabrina’s room.

Sabrina has three powerful Pokémon: Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam, all at level 50. Use Pokémon with Ghost, Bug, or Dark-type attacks to have an advantage over Psychic types.

Earning the Marsh Badge

Defeat Sabrina to receive the Marsh Badge. With this badge, you’ll be ready to move on to the next stage of your Pokémon journey.
